Why Trust the Bible?

One of the chief marks of a false prophet is his teaching of something other than the Bible (66 books of OT and NT) as the foundation and authority of our faith. But why should we trust the Bible?

Matthew 7:15-20 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

WE ALL TRUST SOMEBODY –

In relation to the biggest questions in life

  • Is God real? If so what is He like?
  • What is a human being?
  • Does life have (real) purpose?
  • What is my biggest problem and can it be repaired? If so how?
  • What happens when I die?

Some Trust In…

  • Self-intuition
  • Philosophical theory
  • Scientific Discoveries
  • Religious gurus

But Christians trust the Bible
as the Word of God

  • This is because God saves us shows us it is true.
  • Jesus rose from the dead to confirm its truth.

There are at least 3 more confirming reasons to believe it:

1. The Bible Has a Divine Edge

  • It’s unity in spite of diversity
  •

  • It’s fulfilled prophecies

Daniel 2:28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these:

  • It’s central organizing center (the Glory of God)

Revelation 21:10-11 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

2. The Bible Corresponds to Reality

  • Archeology
  •

  • Descriptions of human nature

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

3. The Bible Meets the Greatest Need of Humanity

This is the need for grace.

Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, wehave peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faithinto this grace in which we stand, and werejoicein hope of the glory of God.

Who are you going to trust?
