Introduction to GIG

Growth in Grace (or GIG) is a discipleship program that takes seriously Jesus command to “Teach them to observe all things…” (Mt. 28:19-20). It is designed for one individual-to-individual discipleship.

Qualifications

Anyone who desires to participate int he Growth in Grace program must be a member of RMLBC for at least 6 months with all the qualifications of membership being met during that time.

Additionally, the potential disciple needs to be aware of the program, how it works, and the commitment involved. Each Growee is responsible for purchasing any resources needed as they move through the program.

Growees

The follower (disciple) of Jesus Christ who has chosen to move through the program is called the Growee because growth is expected for this person. This designation is biblical and hopefully promotes humility as much is being learned.

Guides

Those who are leading the program for another person are called Guides. The Guide will work with the Growee through all of the meeting components and will also supervise the Growee through the listening / reading components.

The Guide should always be available to the Growee should questions or concerns arise along the way. Only those who have finished at least Level 8 and the GIG Training are permitted to be Guides.

The Shepherd

The Shepherd is the head, or principle of the program. His task will be: (1) To start the process by going through all the components himself and receive the Water and Basin Certificate. (2) To move the program to the next Growees in his setting. (3) To keep completion records as they come back up a GuideLine. (4) To present Growees with certificates in some public fashion as they are completed. (5) To encourage strong participation and effort of immediate Growees, and to encourage the encouragement of strong participation and effort down the GuideLine.

GuideLines

The Growee line (family line) of a particular Guide, including the Guide, any of the Growees he has personally worked with, and any other generations of Growee’s that come from them. Guidelines are very important for continued accountability.

Modules

There are a total of 60 modules that can be completed in any order. Each module has certain requirements that must be met for completion. Usually the Growee will have options for completing each module (for example reading a particular book or watching a series of videos). Some components however do not provide this option.

Component Completion Forms

Whenever the Growee completes a component, a short form should be completed and turned into his/her Guide. This form can simply be emailed, or printed and physically handed to the Guide.

The Guide may ask the Growee additional questions about the component to assure competency.

The Guide should then pass the completion form to his or her Guide, who passes it up the GuideLine until the Shepherd receives it for the official record. This process will allow the entire Guideline to celebrate and pray for Growees with each completed component.

Moving Through the Program

Whenever 5 modules are completed the Growee moves to the next level. Once 3 levels are completed the growee moves to the next stage of servanthood. Beginner Growees will be Freshman Servants. After 3 levels are completed (or 15 total modules), he / she will become a sophomore servant. The program will proceed in this way until all 12 levels (60 total modules) are completed and the Growee graduates.

Certificates of Completion

After each Servanthood Stage is completed the Growee will be publicly recognized with a Certificate of Completion. These are named to especially promote the servanthood aspect of the GIG program and are taken from the Last Supper imagery:

John 13:3-5 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

This discipleship program is all about Growth in Grace. Just as Jesus prepared to wash His disciples feet so this this program is preparation to humbly serve others for the glory of God.

Completing the GIG program will take much effort but does not give anyone the right to feel spiritually superior or intellectually higher than anyone else. Rather it gives Growees tools to use in service of others.

The Christian who received the Water and Basin Certificate is a Growee (and will remain a Growee) who has many tools with which to serve others in Jesus name and for the Glory of God.
