Music is one of the most effective ways to praise the Lord.

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Because there is a variety of musical styles and forms (psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs) we have a variety of music leadership. From praise team to choir to small group ensembles our desire is sing with thankfulness in our hearts to God.

Additionally we desire to celebrate God’s work throughout the history of the church.

One way to do this, is praise God with music written throughout that history. Using the chart below a worship service can be assembled using many styles of music from many time periods. The chart helps maintain balance between styles and time periods.

Purpose Key:

• Inner Circle – a song sung by the church about their position in the Lord (i.e. “I’m a child of the King”).
• Prayer DP – this is a song of direct praise to God (i.e. “Worthy of Worship”).
• Prayer S – a prayer of supplication, asking the Lord to fill a need (i.e. “I Need Thee Every Hour”).
• Preach E – a song designed to preach evangelistically (i.e. “The Nail-Scarred Hand”).
• Preach S – a song designed to encourage believers to send missionaries and witnesses (i.e. “Send the Light”).
• Preach W – a song addressing people encouraging them to worship God (i.e. “All Hail King Jesus”).
• Scripture – a song that quotes Scripture directly, or paraphrases it (i.e. “Seek Ye First”).
• Story – a song the depicts a story from the Bible (i.e. “Away in a Manger”).
• Testimony – a song the recounts God’s work in an individual’s life (i.e. “I Stand Amazed in the Presence”).

Style Key:

• Chorus – a song that repeats a chorus-like element, a verse may also be part of the structure i.e. “Sanctuary”).
• Christmas – a song focused on the elements surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ (i.e. “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”).
• Easter – a song focused on the elements surrounding the resurrection of Jesus Christ (i.e. “Christ is Risen).
• EPW – Early Praise and Worship, produced between 1980 and 1995 (i.e. “Shout to the Lord”).
• MPW – Modern Praise and Worship, produced in or after 1996 (i.e. “Made to Worship”).
• SG – Southern Gospel (i.e. “Bringing in the Sheaves”).
• Trad hymn – a traditional hymn of the church (i.e. “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks”).
